These are the stories of Meriem, Aroussia, Fatma, Nabila, Verdine, Zina, Ali, and Francis. They all share one thing: they were transformed after adult education courses, in literacy centers, Arabic language teaching or vocational training centers managed by civil society organizations (CSOs), municipal centers, or centers managed by ministries, in urban, periurban, or rural areas.
Access to education gave them access to a whole new world. It allowed them to better understand the family, community, societal and global issues facing everyone. They have studied, understood, and used their citizenship for their interest but also for that of the community. Their awareness was raised on issues of civics, democracy, environment, and health, they have learned to use technology to participate in the world around them, they have integrated into the economic circuits through vocational training or the jobs they landed.
Education has pushed them into territories previously inaccessible: they are no longer spectators but have become acting citizens, they are no longer on the margins of the public space, they have captured it. This photo feature pays tribute to these women and men through their stories by putting into perspective their paths. It also aims to witness these changes, which are often imperceptible from the outside, but which are part of the foundations of active citizenship
